Modding has been a huge part of the G Theft Auto games on PC ever since K Theft Machine III debuted a then-new 3D engine and a much larger world. Because Rockstar doesn't provide whatsoever kind of formal editing tools, however, the end-user community took it upon themselves to create the necessary software.

One of the most popular editing suites used in GTA V was a programme called OpenIV, which supported database manipulation and could be used to create a vast range of gameplay changes, effects, and content swaps. If you've ever seen videos of the pop Vehicle Cannon mod, you lot've got some idea of how zany some GTA V modders are (and to be fair, it looks hilarious).

OpenIV has been indispensable to the larger modding customs, which why Accept-Ii's contempo terminate-and-desist order against the mod has sent players into revolt. The makers of OpenIV announced earlier this week that they had received an order from Take-Two's lawyers telling them to cease and desist from distributing their piece of work. By extension, the hundreds of mods that relied on OpenIV are no longer functional, either. Take-Two claims that the unabridged issue is non considering they are against modding, but supposedly because OpenIV interferes with Thousand Theft Auto Online. The company released a statement, proverb:

Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online feel for everybody. We are working to figure out how nosotros tin continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players.

This explanation hasn't set well with many modders, who have noted that OpenIV was strictly a single-thespian mod system. At that place's supposedly no evidence that OpenIV interfered with GTA Online, which hasn't really seemed to need any help from modders when it comes to existence a rampant hellhole of cheats and hacks.

Few would debate Take-Two doesn't have the correct to control its games and the modding situation in any way it pleases. But Rockstar has previously been supportive of the modding customs, and this C&D clearly pissed off a lot of long-term players. Modern communities tend to keep a game live and in the public eye much longer than it might otherwise be, and this very much includes GTA V. Not all mods are banned (trainers still work in single player), but OpenIV'due south force was its ability to manage hundreds of mods at one time.

PCGamer notes that modding fans have taken to Steam to vent their disapproval; only 21 percent of the 23,000 reviews left for GTA V in the past 30 days are positive. OpenIV was besides used to produce machinimas based in GTA Five, since information technology allowed for camera controls not implemented in the included game. Mods like LSPDFR, which transform GTA 5 into a constabulary enforcement simulator, required OpenIV. The software yet works if you lot already downloaded it, but tin't be downloaded anymore.
